I’m not big on railing accusations against a business. It’s not my style. I’ve learned that most of the time, if you give professional people the opportunity, they will make things right. But I have been failed by a business – SUNTRUST BANK. I would recommend not doing business with this institution. I can take responsibility for this part – I’m not a world traveler. I had no idea I needed to call the bank to let them know I’d be making debit purchases in another country. I haven’t been outside the United States since 2006, and then… I didn’t make any debit purchases. Prior to that, it was 1991. The bank never made me aware that, “If you travel more than 100 miles from your home, and try to use your card, we’re going to deactivate it for safety sake.” Seriously?! Well, that’s what happened. My card didn’t get deactivated in Jamaica. My card got deactivated because I used it in ORLANDO AIRPORT. That’s 88.3 miles from my house. SERIOUSLY?! It was deactivated on July 21, as I prepared for a flight to Jamaica. On July 23, I attempted to use my card at the resort where I was staying, and my card was declined. “That’s strange. I know I have money.” I even checked my balance standing there in the resort, saw my money was good, and said, “Oh, it must be your system.” Two days later, I tried to use my card again at another resort. The result? The same. Declined. A travel companion asked “Did you let your bank know you were going to be in Jamaica for the week?” “No, I didn’t know I needed to do that.” “Well, that’s probably it. They’ve locked up your card.” I called SunTrust, and was transferred to the Fraud Prevention Department. First, I was told an outright lie by SunTrust Fraud Prevention. “Your card was deactivated because a retailer reported a security breach. A new card has been ordered and is in the mail.” That’s not what happened at all. I was later told by SunTrust my card was deactivate because of suspicious use. (Which is it?!) “I’m overseas, and I need money. How am I now going to get that?” “I can unlock your card when you’re at an ATM and allow you to draw out money.” “I’m fifty miles from the nearest ATM. I don’t have access to an ATM. I need my debit card for this trip.” “I cannot unlock your card, sir.” “Well, you just told me you COULD unlock my card for an ATM, but you can’t unlock my card in general? Even if I… the ACCOUNT HOLDER… authorize you to do so?!” “I cannot unlock your card sir. I can only unlock your card at an ATM.” “Well, even if I was to GET to an ATM, I am not going to spend $2.50 a minute on my cell phone to call you back, and sit on hold with you for 30 minutes while you piddle in my account.” “Well, then, sir, unfortunately I’m not going to be able to help you. When you return to the United States, visit your local SunTrust branch for assistance.” I was left in Jamaica with no money, and no recourse. SunTrust would not assist me. Now, 17 days later, and I still don’t have a debit card. I have money. I do 98% of my transactions by debit card. Yet SunTrust has EPIC FAILED me as a customer. So, I’ve joined a Credit Union. When all my direct deposits, automatic payments, and online banking has been situated, I will be closing my SunTrust Account for good. I have had a car loan with SunTrust in the early 90’s. I enjoyed that experience. I have banked with SunTrust since 2009, and until recently have had no problems. However, this is not acceptable to me – and their obvious disregard for me as a customer has left me seeking a better banking experience. I personally recommend that you avoid SunTrust bank, and bank ANYWHERE ELSE.
